The chihuahua miniature puppy is usually an unhealthy puppy and makes unhealthy adult dogs often found in rescues because of expensive health problems.
This is a relatively healthy and long-lived breed, its life span averaging 15-17 years. These dogs are active and intelligent, and despite their small size, they are quite active and communicative. They can do okay without a yard but should not be confined to small spaces either. They feature sturdy bodies with a well sprung ribcage, lean shoulders and straight limbs. These little dogs are fond of running and need space in the house. They also enjoy open-air exercise. As speed increases, the front and the hind legs tend to converge toward the central line of gravity.

The so called teacup or pocket-size variety of the breed that is so popular in the USA and abroad, doesn’t exist. Very small dogs occur very seldom as a freak of nature. But some kennels use unethical techniques to produce small dogs. Usually these dogs are simply premature, because they have been conceived a week later than the first babies in the litter and are born together with the others. Such dogs are not fully developed and can have genetic faults. The mortality rate among them is rather high.
