Chihuahuas Rescues Breeders - Standard Description

Chihuahuas have a rounded apple-shaped skull. Eyes are set wide apart, dark or ruby. In white colored Chihuahua species, eyes can be lighter. Ears are big, mostly erect. In a calm state, they usually are positioned at a 45-degree angle to the vertical. Muzzle is not very long and is slightly sharp. Nose is usually dark, but lighter colors or pink are permissible in light colored varieties. The jaws occlude in a level or in a scissors bite.

Life Span: 15 years or more.

The neck curves. The topline is straight and leveled. Ribcage is rounded and well sprung, but not barrel-shaped. Tail is long and curved in different permissible fashions, except tucking between the hind legs. Forequarters are lean. At the same time, chest is pretty roomy and broad; the front legs are set widely apart, adding an amusingly sturdy streak to the dog's general appearance. Hind legs are strong and muscular.

Coat is soft, smooth and it lies close to the body. It is relatively rough on the neck and short on the head and on ears. Tail has a denser coat. In long coated varieties more preferable is smooth, straight or slightly curled hair. Long coated Chihuahuas have fringed ears and fluffy tails. Coloration varies, ranging from different solid tones to splotched combinations.

Chihuahuas move in a confident and sturdy gait. Front legs reach far ahead, for which compensation is required using a powerful drive of hind legs. As the speed increases, the front- and the hind legs tend to converge at the middle of the body. Hind legs step right behind front legs. The topline remains level and straight, and the head carried high giving Chihuahuas a graceful and dignified look.
