Chihuahua Rescues

Chihuahua Rescue organizations and clubs that are generally referred to as Chihuahua Rescues, deal in finding new owners and new homes for abandoned Chihuahuas. Although the Chihuahua is a low maintenance dog, many owners still fail to provide decent and healthy conditions for their dogs. Chihuahuas require a great deal of attention, and many Chihuahua owners turn out to be too busy to care for their dogs. As a result, they have to either cast their dogs outside or surrender them to Rescue organizations.

Chihuahua Rescue clubs are non-profit volunteer organizations. Besides finding homes for abandoned dogs, they offer various sorts of veterinary assistance to their dogs, because many of dogs they find suffer from infections, parasite infestations, hereditary abnormalities and injuries. Chihuahuas are very small and fragile dogs, and hence they are extremely sensitive to negative outside influences. Almost every rescued Chihuahua has to be treated for respiratory diseases.

There are various reasons why people abandon their Chihuahuas. Not infrequently, this happens to dogs that have been purchased from unethical breeders or pet stores. Unfortunately, there are lots of irresponsible and profit-oriented breeders who make business on breeding. Such breeders are commonly referred to as “puppy mills”, because they produce large numbers of puppies without due control over their dogs’ genetic health and under poor conditions. True breeders work toward constant improvement of the breed’s genetic makeup, and they never breed for quantity. Dogs that come from dollar-oriented breeders run a greater risk of having genetic diseases. Many of them develop serious neurotic conditions that often trigger behavioral problems, which are often hard to correct for even experienced Chihuahua Rescue specialists. Needless to say, a dog with so many problems will never join the show ring.

Chihuahuas are not intended for any service. They are intended for indoor life, and they are very sensitive to the extremes of outer environment. At the same time, they do appreciate outdoor activities on warm days, and hence they should not be locked inside all the time. These little dogs require daily walking and they would not mind a moderate exercise. Chihuahuas are renowned for their gentle disposition and saucy expression. These dogs tend to be very protective around their loved ones, and they may challenge much larger dogs. They should not be trusted with big dogs and they are not recommended for families with children. More often than not, failure to reconcile a Chihuahua to a child gives additional work to Chihuahua Rescues.
