The show quality dogs can be from 1 to 6 pounds in weight, pet quality may be over 6 pounds. The breed is characterized by a well rounded skull and a short muzzle with lean cheeks and jaws, large eyes and long erect ears. This breed is also characterized by a firm and sturdy standing. The head is large in proportion to the body, the chest is broad and deep, the shoulders slope into a firm and level back, and both front- and hind legs are straight, with toes well split up, but not spread.

The coat of these dogs should be of a soft and silky texture, with a dense undercoat. The hair can be either flat or slightly curly, but not too thin. Any color and pattern is possible in this breed, but solid colors are preferable. There are two types of dogs differing in the length of the coat. These dogs are easy to care for, but their fragile bones make them sensitive to dislocations and fractures. Dogs with unclosed moleras are susceptible to head injuries.
