Show quality dogs of this breed should not exceed 6 pounds in weight, but pet quality animals reach 9 pounds and more. The front legs are straight and firm, set widely apart. The feet are small and delicate, with well separated toes. The hind legs are also straight and parallel, with well-angulated hocks. Both pairs of legs move in balance, and tend to converge toward the center line as speed increases. Despite its diminutive size, these dogs appreciate physical activity and games. They do not tolerate cold and can be prone to respiratory diseases. They are susceptible to head injuries and fractures.

The personality of such animals is very friendly, they take the best features from their ancestors and are smart, intelligent, loving and people-oriented, well adapted to an apartment living. Often such dogs appear from undesirable breeding of purebred dogs. They have to be spayed or neutered in order not to spoil the breed. Often such dogs are found stray in the streets and in rescue organizations waiting for new homes.
