This breed is not intended for hard work. Although many consider it to be a toy breed, it is not recommended for young children. These dogs have very fragile bones that break easily. Therefore, you should not permit your children to hug them, because it may lead to a serious injury. These dogs must be taught not to wiggle out of your arms, because they may fall down and receive a fatal injury. Puppies and dogs with unclosed moleras are particularly susceptible to head injuries.

To buy a purebred dog you have to choose a reputable breeder who is registered by the AKC and strictly abides to the breeding standard. You should visit the kennel yourself to see the condition the puppies are raised in and look at their parents. Only reputable breeders sell their dogs with a life long guarantee, health certificates and all necessary registration papers. Buying a dog from puppy mills, pet shops and brokers you have no guarantee that the dog is free from genetic defects.
