Baby dogs are extremely vulnerable to head injuries, because they have an unclosed spot on top of the skull called ‘molera’ or ‘fontanel.’ They have very fragile bones and hence are very susceptible to injuries. They are sensitive to cold and may go down with rheumatism and respiratory diseases. Therefore, it is recommended to dress these dogs in sweaters on cold days. In general, these dogs are very healthy, and their life expectancy is 15-17 years. Hereditary diseases rarely occur among them.

Young dogs of this breed are very vulnerable and are difficult to keep; mortality among them can be as high as 30% per litter. Bacterial diseases and viruses are the most common causes of deaths of dogs under 3 weeks of age. If the bitch is very small, the delivery may be complicated and she may die or will be unable to raise the litter herself.
