The belief is that the dog originated in Chihuahua, a state of Mexico. However, there is still little certainty as to where the dog originated.Some think, that the dog arrived in Mexico with Asian and Chinese immigrants. Others believe that the breed is native to South America, and this viewpoint does have some proof. Fragments of dogs' skeletons found in ancient graves indicate that natives probably worshipped them.

Chihuahuas may have come to the New World by Spanish Conquistadors. There are two types of Chihuahuas: the short coated and the long coated. The long coated appeared after crossbreeding of Chihuahuas with other toy dogs, such as Pomeranian, Pekingese and Papillon's. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1904.
